Samsung Foundry Receives First 2nm Chip Order From Major Partner, Before TSMC

Recently, Samsung became the first manufacturer to receive orders for a 2nm chip. Samsung Foundry’s partner is Preferred Networks (PFN), a Japanese startup. Samsung and TSMC are long-standing competitors in the semiconductor industry. If Samsung’s 3nm processes go ahead but come later, with a 2nm process, Samsung won’t let TSMC have a chance to dominate.

PFN is a valuable partner for Samsung. PFN stands out as one of Japan’s most advanced companies with the resources and knowledge to develop customized software and supply supercomputers. The company specializes in deep learning for IoT applications.

The new partnership with PFN plays a strategic, bridging role, opening up the opportunity for Samsung to partner with existing PFD partners such as Intel and NVIDIA and other major technology companies for future 2nm chip orders.

While TSMC is known for high pricing for new technologies, Samsung takes advantage of the price advantage, not afraid to offer competitive prices to bridge the gap with its competitors. Samsung has offered an attractive price for the 2nm wafer sheets that will offer PFN and attract the first customers. For years, Samsung has been judged to be more modest, but it has shown an effort to confront TSMC and not let its rivals dominate the industry.
