Rumor: OpenAI is developing its own online search engine, competing with Google’s dominance.

That’s from The Information. According to anonymous sources, OpenAI is developing an “online search product,”  which could initially be based on the Microsoft Bing platform, but once it’s attracted, it’ll be perfectly possible to use OpenAI’s own algorithm.

Since the name became popular in the technology industry, OpenAI has gone from one success to another. And one thing is pretty certain, they won’t want to stop. Just a small startup in the eyes of many a few years ago succeeded in bringing the world’s largest technology corporations to change the way they think and do business, applying AI models to every product, from phones to computers, from mobile apps to online searches. And if OpenAI decides to target Google’s king in the online search industry, the commercial product will probably appear soon.

It’s unfortunate that The Information’s anonymous source doesn’t mention much of the details of OpenAI’s research project to develop an online search engine. Most importantly, it remains unclear whether this search engine operates independently of ChatGPT. The essence of ChatGPT now is that if you pay for ChatGPP Plus, you’ll be able to use a feature called Browse with Bing, which combines search engines with chatbots so that AI synthesizes really useful and valuable information.

If this information is accurate, this will be the biggest obstacle OpenAI decides to engage in. Google’s own position for so many years has not been that of a single corporation that can collapse. Yahoo failed, and Bing took second place with a very low usage rate. In return, with a search engine powerful enough to prove useful, even more than Google Search, the monopoly of the online search industry, which helps Google make money from online advertising, will be threatened.
