Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has earned an impressive award at the Grammys, winning Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media. The Star Wars franchise has a history of incredible musical scores, starting in the 1970s with the legendary composer John Williams. However, this recent award for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor attests to the continuing quality of the series’ music.

While many elements contributed to the success of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor when it launched in April 2023, its music resonated with many fans. The musical score was composed by Stephen Barton, who has worked on numerous titles, such as Apex Legends and Smite 2, and Gordy Haab, who has composed for the Star Wars: Battlefront games, Halo Wars 2, and more. Reprising their roles as composers for the series after the success of 2019’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Barton and Haab helped further the emotional connection to Cal Kestis’ story through their musical score.

On February 4, The Recording Academy recognized the composers for their work on the game. During the 2024 Grammy Awards, it was revealed that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor had won Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media. Barton and Haab’s soundtrack for the game beat out other big-name nominees, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, God of War Ragnarok, Hogwarts Legacy, and Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Wins Best Score Soundtrack at Grammys

It should be noted that the Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media is a relatively new Grammy, with last year being the first time the award was presented. That time, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Dawn of Ragnarok DLC beat out the likes of Aliens: Fireteam Elite, Call of Duty: Vanguard, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and Old World. Based on comments from the Recording Academy, the award “recognizes excellence in score soundtrack albums comprised predominately of original scores and created specifically for, or as a companion to, a current video game or other interactive media released within the qualification period.”

While this Grammy is impressive, it is not the first time Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has been in the running for a significant award. Previously, the game was nominated for Best Performance (Cameron Monaghan) and Best Action/Adventure Game at The Game Awards. It has also received nominations at other awards shows, such as the Golden Joystick Awards.

It will be interesting to see what is next for the Star Wars Jedi series. A new game is rumored to be in development, with Cal Kestis’ actor saying he wants to reprise his role. If another game in the franchise is eventually released, music will likely play a significant part in telling its story.
