Nikon files a patent for a hybrid sensor that combines Global and Rolling Shutter.

Nikon submitted an additional amendment to a patent regarding a hybrid sensor type that combines Global and Rolling Shutter. Information about Nikon developing this type of sensor has been available since 2022; you can read more about it here.

Why is there a need for such a hybrid sensor? The fundamental reason is to achieve the superior advantages of a Global shutter sensor while keeping the cost low like that of a Rolling shutter sensor.

Basically, the global shutter is the top-tier sensor type in current commercial recording devices, followed by the rolling shutter BIS sensor. Stacked and below are countless types of Rolling shutter sensors, created by camera manufacturers to overcome the drawbacks of Rolling shutter.

So the solution for a type of peak sensor like a Global shutter but at a price as affordable as a Rolling shutter sounds really appealing. It is known that Nikon started this project back in 2016, and it wasn’t until 2022 that we received the first pieces of information. This latest patent submission is just a small addition.

It can be seen that the journey from project, theory, and paper designs to becoming a commercial product is a long one. However, if Nikon can achieve this, the future of global shutter sensors becoming mainstream will not be far off.
